Spektrum was designed as a mechanism to facilitate inner and outer exploration in the audience through incremental shifts in sound, light, and environment.
Participants are invited to engage themes of place, ephemerality, immortality and their connection to the inner, outer, and ever-transforming cosmos.
Originally staged in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz mountains in 2018, Spektrum was conceived, designed, and performed by Sarah Farrell, Nick Jaina, and James Mackessy along with guest performing artists.
Spektrum quietly reemerges for an incubator weekend in the Driftless Region on July 10-11 of 2026, alongside concurrent installations and performances with local collaborating artists.
Because Spektrum is experienced individually, entry is limited and advance sign-up is required. Please reserve a timed entry for either Friday or Saturday evening using the links below
Spektrum: Commonly Asked Questions
Q. What is Spektrum?
Spektrum is designed as a mechanism to facilitate inner and outer exploration in the audience through incremental shifts in sound, light, and environment.
-
Q. Why was it created?
An anonymous benefactor wanted to bring this experience to the Driftless Region. They asked James and Sarah to install it at aendre arthouse. Nick Jaina was contracted to provide a musical score.
-
Q. Yeah, but is it a performance or what?
It is not what you would call a performance, no. It is an installation of sound and light. You walk through the space one at a time so you can have the most potent and intimate experience possible. You are invited to interact in some very simple ways with the space to help you with a transformation. You are not asked to do anything embarrassing or difficult. The entire experience is about you and your emotional evolution.
-
Q. What else do I need to know?
The space will be dimly-lit, but walkways will be clear. If you use reading glasses to see text, please bring them inside with you. Comfortable shoes are
encouraged. Backpacks and handbags will be held at the bar and not allowed into the installation.
-
Q. Is it scary?
No. It is not a haunted house. Nothing is going to jump out at you. Some of the emotional content might be intense, but the intention of the space is to provide you with a positive experience.
-
Q. Is it funny? Is it a magic show? Is it an escape room or some kind of puzzle?
It is none of these things. There are no jokes, no tricks, and no puzzle to solve.
-
Q. Which night is best to attend?
Because every audience member experiences the space individually, you don't have to worry about the size of the crowd on a given night.
-
Q. Should I come?
Yes. We look forward to sharing this process and experience with you!
